Melodee (tess)

Try the generators

Switch on first. The demo puts a generator on each track (Turing, Morph, Markov, Euclid) and presses PLAY.

Or set one up yourself, on the selected track (T1 when you switch on):

  1. Press SEQ (0). The screen shows NOTES.
  2. Turn SELECT one click clockwise (↑) to the PATTERN page.
  3. Turn KNOB 1 (MODE): STEP, then TURING, EUCLID, MARKOV, MORPH. STEP is the normal step sequencer.
  4. Press PLAY (-), then turn KNOB 2 to 4 while it plays.
  5. Turn ALGORITHM (← →) to pick another track and give it a generator too. PRESETS changes its sound.

TURING

A looping shift register: a riff that repeats or slowly mutates.

LENGTH
loop length, 2 to 16 steps
PROB
chance of a change each step; at 0 (Lock) it repeats exactly
SPAN
pitch range, 1 to 3 octaves

EUCLID

Hits spread as evenly as possible over the loop.

STEPS
loop length, 1 to 32
PULSE
number of hits
ROT
shifts the pattern round the loop

MARKOV

A melody that wanders from note to note.

LEAP
small steps (low) or big jumps (high)
DENS
chance each step plays; try 60 to 70 %
SPAN
pitch range in octaves

MORPH

Blends two rhythm patterns.

POS
from pattern A (0) to pattern B (127)
SNP A
pattern A, one of 8
SNP B
pattern B, one of 8

Make it change over time: from PATTERN, turn SELECT on to EVOLVE. EVERY sets how many bars pass between changes, AMOUNT how big they are, and ROLL makes one change now. The next pages are FORM, which builds sections (AB, ABAC and more) and returns to them, and TWEAK (SHIFT, DROP, HUMAN, FOLLOW). Notes snap to the track's scale: press SCL to change it.
